How Much Does Dementia Care Cost?

According to Alzheimer’s Society, there are currently around 1 million people living with dementia in the UK. This figure could rise to 1.4 million in the next 20 years.

We recently published a guide to caring for loved ones in the home. But depending on the persons’ care and support needs, it might help to arrange for professional dementia care support. In this post, we’ll discuss how dementia care in the home works, and outline how much you might expect to pay for these services.

What Types of Dementia Care are Available?

Some people with dementia have more complex care and support needs than others. The type of care you get will depend on how much support the person with dementia is assessed with needing.

With dementia care, a qualified professional can visit the person with dementia at their home, where they can provide a range of support services. This might include help with:

  • Personal care
  • Mobility support
  • Medication support
  • General household tasks including cooking, cleaning, and laundry.

Dementia care can also include some companionship care, to help meet the person with dementia’s social or emotional needs.

You can read our full guide to what help in the home can include.

How Much Does Dementia Care Cost?

A person with dementia can spend an average of £100,000 on their care over their lifetime. The amount you pay will depend on your specific care needs, along with your location – care services may charge different rates across the country. Dementia care can cost on average 15% more than standard social care.

According to figures from Trusted Care, this is how much dementia care in the UK currently costs:

  • Home care – £28 – £31 per hour
  • Nursing care – £1,400 – £2,000 a week
  • Residential care – £1,200 – £1,900 a week

Is Funding Available for Dementia Care?

For nursing and home care, people with dementia can apply for Funding Nursing Care (FNC). This can be up to £350 a week, which the NHS pays directly to the nursing home. If the FNC payment does not cover the full cost of care, then the local authority can pay the rest, so long as the individual is eligible.
