Local Charity, Crossroads Care Surrey is launching a new campaign today called Unlocking Lives to shine a light on the challenges faced by unpaid carers, and to generate support from the local community to help carers in Surrey.
For many unpaid local carers earning a regular income or taking a little time out is simply not an option. When you’re looking after someone else, it’s easy to put aside your own needs. However, it is important to look after yourself, including both your physical health as well as your mental health and wellbeing so that you can be there for your loved ones. Sadly, many carers often feel isolated with no one to turn to, and this can have a negative impact on their mental and physical health.
“I love caring for my parents” says Gaye, “However, in the last year with Covid19, caring has taken its toll. My parents have needed increasingly more of my time, which has left me feeling exhausted and isolated.”
Crossroads Care Surrey is a charity providing respite breaks for carers to enable them to take some time out, to meet friends or just get some everyday jobs done. Last year Crossroads Care provided respite care for more than 2,000 unpaid carers in Surrey but there are lots more who need their support.
Terry Hawkins, Crossroads Care Surrey’s CEO, said: “Our waiting list continues to grow. We are doing everything we possibly can to help as many unpaid carers get the respite support they deserve and need. But the numbers do not lie; demand is soaring and providers such as Crossroads Care Surrey simply do not have the funding to support all those who are desperate for our help.
The new campaign will reach out to the local community across social media, direct mail and digital media to raise awareness of unpaid carers in Surrey and to show how they can get involved through volunteering, fundraising or donating. For those that can donate, as little as £15 can help place a volunteer to give companionship to someone that is cared for so that their carer can take some time out.
Through the campaign Crossroads Care Surrey hope to unlock life for lots of unpaid carers. For more information about the campaign and how to get involved visit www.crossroadscaresurrey.org.uk/unlockinglives
