Our mission is to reduce the impact of continence problems on children and their families.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>ERIC, the Children\u2019s Bowel and Bladder Charity is the UK\u2019s leading charity supporting all children and teenagers with a bowel or bladder problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"page-heading\"><span role=\"text\">Why ERIC you may wonder?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span role=\"text\">Well, our official title since ERIC was set up back in the 1980s is:\u00a0<strong>E<\/strong>ducation And\u00a0<strong>R<\/strong>esources For\u00a0<strong>I<\/strong>mproving Childhood\u00a0<strong>C<\/strong>ontinence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span role=\"text\">In 2016, we decided to simplify things by adding the &#8216;Children&#8217;s Bowel &amp; Bladder Charity&#8217; after our name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span role=\"text\">We are also well known as the wee and poo experts!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For over thirty years, we have been providing information and emotional support to families about these common but often misunderstood conditions.<\/p>\n<p>1 in 12 children in the U.K. are affected by a bowel or bladder condition\u00a0including\u00a0<a class=\"glossaryLink\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; transition: var(--transition); color: #000000 !important; text-decoration: none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #000000 !important; --textdecoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/eric.org.uk\/glossary\/constipation\/\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Constipation&lt;span class=&amp;quot;dashicons &amp;quot; data-icon=&amp;quot;&amp;quot; style=&amp;quot;color:#000;display:inline;vertical-align:baseline;&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;\/span&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Children with constipation may open their bowels less than once every three days; pass occasional very large motions, or have more frequent small motions; stools may be different textures and may be offensive smelling; they may withhold or strain to prevent themselves from passing large painful stools and may have problems with abdominal pain and distension, or soiling (see below). Children with constipation often have reduced appetite, are unhappy, irritable or moody and may have reduced energy levels. This is normally associated with&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;chronic constipation and is usually totally outside the child\u2019s control. Often the child is&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;unaware that they have soiled, even though stools may smell offensive to others. Lack of&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;awareness is due to changes to the anatomy of the large bowel as the result of constipation&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;and is not due to behavioural or psychological issues.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;Rarely soiling is not caused by constipation. Any child who is soiling should be assessed by a&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;healthcare professional. Treatment is usually with laxatives, which may initially make the&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;problem worse. The impact on their life, and their family&#8217;s, can be devastating.<\/p>\n<p>The embarrassment and shame surrounding these continence problems, means that many young people and their families suffer in silence with no-one to turn to.<\/p>\n<p>The actions we take and decisions we make at ERIC aim to reduce the impact of bowel and bladder issues on children\u2019s and teenagers lives in the UK by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improving the social environment for children, young people and families in relation to bowel and bladder issues<\/li>\n<li>Enabling children, young people and families to make informed choices about bladder and bowel issues.<\/li>\n<li>Increasing early intervention into (or early prevention of) childhood bowel and bladder issues<\/li>\n<li>Providing equality of access to information and services for all<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The impact of getting the right support and information to deal with a continence difficulty can be dramatic: children can start living a normal life, they can take part in social activities, they feel happier and more confident, and the strain on family life is
