SUMMARY:Training sessions to support dementia care at home - at The Hive Guildford
DESCRIPTION:Do you care for someone with a memory issue or dementia? \nFree training sessions are available to support you to provide the best possible care at home\, helping your loved one to live safely and well. \nFrom understanding the importance of hydration to learning about coping strategies and dealing with concerning behaviours\, you can choose from up to nine essential topics to help you deal with the changes that dementia can bring. \nThe training will be available at day centres and other community venues in Surrey and is spread over several sessions. Sessions are currently available in Guildford and Milford – please see below for details. We’re aiming to run training in Woking and Surrey Heath next\, with other areas to follow\, so wherever you live please register using this expression of interest in dementia care training form. \nBut it’s not just about equipping carers with practical skills and knowledge. The sessions will also enable you to connect and share experiences with others who look after loved ones with similar conditions. They will also include signposting to other sources of support. \nThe training is being offered as part of the joint dementia strategy\, a five-point plan to improve the lives of Surrey residents with dementia and their families. \nThe “living well” strand aims to support people with a diagnosis of dementia to maintain their independence for as long as possible and enjoy a good quality of life. Surrey County Council is working with health partners and other organisations to deliver the strategy\, which also aims to improve dementia prevention\, diagnosis\, community support and end-of-life care. \nIn Surrey\, more than 17\,000 people are living with dementia and numbers are projected to rise further. \nThe council worked with carers of people with dementia to design the training\, after carers said they needed tailored support to help loved ones with this complex condition. \nThe council and its partners are committed to supporting the Surrey Carers Strategy which aims to support carers to live well. \nContact details\nIf you are interested in the training sessions\, please complete the expression of interest in dementia care training form\, or if you have a more general query\, please: \n\nemail communitiesandpreventionprojects@surreycc.gov.uk\ncall 0300 200 1005\ntext 07527 182 861 (for the deaf or hard of hearing)\n\nSessions are available at The Hive\, Park Barn Drive\, Guildford\, GU2 8EN from 11am to 12pm on the following dates: \n\n1 May – Introduction to dementia\n8 May – Managing behaviours of concern\n15 May – Carer Well-being\n22 May – Promoting dignity and independence during personal care\n5 June – Preventing trips and falls\n25 June – Using Technology-Enabled Care and Homes (TECH) in care
